Lactic acid bacteria were the first beneficial bacteria utilised as probiotics. These bacterial strains are part of the natural microflora of the gut. Through rapid proliferation they form a microbial barrier in the gut against pathogenic germs. Production of lactic acid and various other substances result in suppression of pathogenic bacteria while the desired microflora is sustained.
